…to my little brother, the best brother one could possibly ask for. You’re simply amazing and this post is dedicated to you.
Tonight you are going on an adventure, an adventure so full of opportunity and unknowns I’ll bet it feels scary. You are leaving on a jet plane to go to Germany, arriving to a new life and a new job as a medical physicist. Wow.
I’m so proud of you for making this moment the opportunity that it is. I *think* you might be a grown up now so please remember to set your alarm clock, pack your frisbee and always carry a plectrum.
Up and at ‘em bud. Love your big sister x

Dear Lauren’s not-so-little brother,
Twenty years ago, I got on a bus in Norfolk and got off in Nuernberg, planning to have no plan. A generation later, Germany has given me sunburn, frozen pipes, an interest in jazz and ballet; castles, caves, glittering peaks and whispering marshes; deep green forests and laser-lit warehouses; music, art – oh the art! – and the vibrant joy of a true second language. It has given me Hamburg’s salty dawns and Berlin’s throbbing nights; milk warm from the farmer and bread so rich that just the smell of it is a meal. I have enjoyed the privilege of being surrounded by an interested, hospitable people who deeply believe in democracy and education. I can hear German, Turkish, Polish, Russian, English and Italian from my kitchen window. I am surrounded by museums, theaters, science-fiction hospitals and magical rocket trains. I have found love, joy and the best friends I could imagine. And I have learned that there are always other ways to do the things I took for granted.
I love Germany. I hope you will to.
(And I didn’t even start on the beer…)
